Young Guru has issued a message to writers covering Hip Hop asking them to make sure the genre’s history is correctly documented and not rewritten over time.

It seems something written in a recent Hip Hop book or said in a documentary irked Guru as he issued a PSA on his IG Story on Tuesday (October 25) calling out those who speak on rap culture. Soccer Scarf

“Please please be careful what you write in these books about hip-hop,” Guru wrote. “There is a difference between who did something ‘first’ vs who was the most popular.”

He continued: “Use the correct words because our children are reading this and taking your word as the truth. And you are blatantly wrong!”

Last month, JAY-Z’s go-to engineer has been recalled some of the legendary rap moments he was around for during an appearance on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast.

Guru revealed that Aaliyah was slated to hop on a remix of Beanie Sigel and Freeway’s “Roc the Mic,” but passed away just days before she was supposed to record.

Aaliyah heard an early version of what became “Roc the Mic” and loved Just Blaze’s production to the point she wanted to lay a verse on it.

“When Aaliyah died, Aaliyah was supposed to be coming to us, flying to us,” he explained. “She had already called Just [Blaze] and was supposed to be doing a remix with Just. The first time I ever seen Hip Hop [Kyambo Joshua] cry.

“She had left us — she had heard ‘Roc the Mic’ when we did it. We was about to go to the strip club and Freeway was complaining, ‘Yo, we been down here for a week and you giving all the beats to Beans and [Memphis] Bleek.’ He looking at Just like, ‘Yo, I can’t get nothing?’”

Young Guru continued: “Just is real quick on the ASR-X… A little longer, like 10 minutes maybe… Aaliyah had heard ‘Roc the Mic’ and she made a point to say something to Hip Hop and was like, ‘That’s the one.’”
